A Twist of the Blade by S.M. Gaither
3.0

This book had a lot going for it. The world is rich, the plot picks up steam, and Elander continues to carry the emotional weight of the story. But none of that changes the fact that Cas made me genuinely angry in this one.

She does not listen. Ever. She acts on emotion with zero thought for consequence, and it’s infuriating to watch. There’s a whole moment where Elander is clearly exhausted, drained of power, barely standing, and Cas insists on doing a magical teleport to go check on her friend. Does she pause and think maybe this is a bad idea? Of course not.

Surprise: it’s a trap. Now she’s been whisked off to safety, and Elander might die alone because of her impulsive choice. Good job, Cas. Really. Maybe next time think with your brain instead of your feelings.

The book opens with Elander, a fallen god, now working to reclaim his status by doing the dirty work of a bigger, worse dude named Melech. There’s tension, stakes, and a slow burn romance with plenty of pain. The reincarnation angle with Cas is heavily hinted and later confirmed, which was satisfying even though they never bother saying the name of the past lover. Still annoying.

There’s a half hearted love scene that leads to Elander vanishing in the morning. Romance takes a backseat here, which is fine, but the moments that are supposed to hit emotionally get derailed when Cas runs off to do the exact thing everyone tells her not to do.

The ending was a cliffhanger. Elander might die. Cas is off somewhere safe but separated from him. All of this could have been avoided if she’d just listened.

The plot is strong, Elander shines, the tension is good, but Cas tested my patience. Hard. She is the reason everything went wrong, and I’m still not over it. If book three doesn’t open with someone sitting her down for a serious talk, I’m going to lose it
