The Day I Stopped Falling for Jerks by Max Monroe
3.0
Ollie (37). 4 time surfing champ who now owns his own surf business. Luciana (aka Lucky) (27). Journalist. Book 1 of 2. Told from the perspective of the heroine doing a podcast. Slow burn. Ends with cliffhanger.
I’m torn on what rating to give this. On one hand, it’s told from a “podcast” POV, so kudos and extra thumbs up for that originality. However, on the flip side you only get the female side of the story and sometimes I felt like I got a summary version.
Example: Ollie & Lucky are exchanging text messages and you get a couple lines. Then Lucky says “eventually I took our playful back-and-forth straight to the point.” So I feel like I missed out on the best part of their conversation....the playful banter. I would have liked to read that. This is only 1 example. There were other times where I felt like the reader got the short version of the story because we are getting a “podcast” POV.
Only getting one side of the story is hard for me (could just be a me thing) as I need to know what’s in the other person’s head to truly get the full connection. Therefore, i wasn’t fully engaged sometimes. Also, this is an extremely slow burn, so no heated moments between these two until about 80%. And, because I didn’t know where Ollie’s head was at, I had no idea if he was viewing it as a one night stand or something deeper.
The other odd thing....fully describing your sexual encounter to a group of listeners...in detail. I don’t know, maybe there are podcasts out there that do that, but I thought it was a little awkward.
I liked the concept of the Dear Ex boyfriend letters, but we only got 2. Her letter to her ex in prison would have been interesting to get to read.
Overall, I guess I’ll rate this one with 3 stars. It had some fun, angsty moments between Ollie and Lucky, but the one-sided POV made me feel like I missed half the story. Once again, that could just be a “me” thing. But if you are like me and like dual POV’s, you might struggle too.
