The Collectors' Society
by Heather Lyons
4.5 Stars
An amazingly creative, original, fantastic story about one of the world’s most beloved characters. Heather Lyons spins gold with The Collectors’ Society, entwining the old with the new, and concocting something uniquely dazzling.
What a treasure! This has to be the most creative story I’ve read all year. Intrigue, adventure, fantasy, romance, thrills, and heartbreak! This book is a genre-bender in that it refuses to be boxed in one category. Similar to Outlander, this tale is a mélange of fantasy, mystery, history, sci-fi, fairytale, and yes, romance. An insanely imaginative tale, that is oh so refreshing to read.
When we meet Alice, she’s a patient in a mental asylum, 6 months after returning from Wonderland, and she’s close to being released. She’s finally regained some mental stability, and she’s resigned herself to the fact that she is to live the rest of her life in the real world, away from the madness and mayhem that is Wonderland. But before she is released, she’s approached by a stranger who tells her that the people she left behind in Wonderland are in danger, and the only way to save them is to return to the place she vowed never to go again.
Aaand that’s all you’re going to get from me, as far as the plot is concerned. I’m not going to describe the plot and the characters in detail, because I want you to experience the pure rush of joy that I experienced when I figured out what it’s about, and who they are. You’re going to be mad with glee! If you’re a book lover, and I assume you are, since, well…hello?..book blog! Anyway, if you’re a book maniac, you’re going to go gaga over this book!
This is a romance, yes, but this is sooo much more than that! This isn’t boy meets girl, boy loses girl, they make up and then live happily ever after. Alice and Finn are two people with pasts, who are slow to trust, and even slower to love. As they embark on their quest to save Wonderland, they learn to trust, because in order to unravel the secrets they seek, they have to let each other in. This is a book about love and sacrifice, discovery and awakening, loss and hope. You will fall in love with every character, even the villains who you’ll love to hate! By the way, this isn’t grade school Alice, she’s grown, she’s a badass! What she has with Finn is smoking, it’s sexy, and it definitely isn’t PC-13.
With its ingenious premise (Gahhh! Why didn’t I think of it?), you won’t want this book to end. Quite simply, this book is fantastic! And I mean that literally. The Collectors’ Society is a fantastic fairy tale, with action, suspense, sex, swooth-worthy romance, heartbreaking loss, and it was an absolute joy to read. A great introduction to a series that I can’t wait to continue. So why did I give it 4.5 hibiscus flowers, if I loved it so much? Because I. Wanted. More. I’m holding my half-flower hostage until I get the next book in this series. :-P READ THIS.
P.S. If you love shows like Once Upon A Time and Sleepy Hollow, then do not hesitate to buy this! You may thank me later. :)
P.P. S. It’s a part of a series, but there's no cliffy.
