This book was written 22 years ago and it has not aged well. The main character spends a lot of time talking about how shameful it would be to be a lesbian (she constantly insults a teacher she thinks is a lesbian and worries that she herself is a lesbian and how awful that would be) or how she could never cope if her father was "a transvestite. It would be more than flesh and blood could stand if I had to "understand" his feminine side." I understand that Georgia was always meant to be vapid, shallow, and self centered so you might roll those attitudes into more of what makes her a dislikable character but in addition to the character not be likeable, not much happens in this book. I read this book because I am trying to read all the Printz honor/winner books and I can't for the life of me see why this one was recognized. There are no deep statements about society or growth in the character. It doesn't shape the reader. It's exactly the kind of book that people who look down on YA lit think all YA lit is. There are lots of YA books with WAY more substance.
