I will never pick up another Abby Jimenez book without reading reviews of it first. I hated this book. I'm giving it three stars because Abby is a great writer. The character development, plot, her writing style, and the interwoven theme of memory were all artistically well done. But, the entire book felt like being locked in a room with my depression with nothing to distract me. I wish I had read the trigger warnings, because it was nothing sexual that's triggering.
Dementia is an absolutely devastating illness, and watching it destroy Stephanie's life and family was heartbreaking. Xavier might be one of my favorite book boyfriends ever, but watching him struggle between his financial commitments and his desire to be with Stephanie was grueling. The financial struggles of the two main characters was also exhausting. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it was just a little too real. And, there wasn't any spicy action to distract from the horrible situations these two found themselves in.
