Portuguese Irregular Verbs
by Alexander McCall Smith
Alexander McCall Smith's books are a mystery to me. They are written in such a way that they are delightfully bland, but also engaging. How does he do that? The characters are not the kind that invite empathy, and yet, I found myself caring about the main character and becoming quite indignant on his behalf quite a lot. Perhaps that is McCall's gift - being able to pass on the traits of his quirky characters to the reader?
