The Dragon Reborn
by Robert Jordan
I can’t help but feel that Robert Jordan has a template that he likes to stick to, the past 3 books of this series have been the same story - long winded travel for 80% of the book with action for the 20% of the book with Rand once again thinking he has killed the Dark One (just like in Eye of the World and the Great Hunt) but shock he hasn’t so the series must continue.
The character development is slow at best and non existent for most. The terrible representation of women continues as well, all of them are haughty, humourless, and combative.
Nynaeve is going to get tension alopecia at this rate if she doesn’t stop pulling her bloody braid constantly, she continues to grate on me so heavily how does she (a villager) take such offence that authority figures like aes sedai (talented, learned women) ask her to do things or advise her??? Who does she think she is? How arrogant do you have to be to think you are above reproach or guidance? She can even control her magic!!
One good thing about this book was that Egwene actually collected all her vertebrae into a spine and stood up to Nynaeve for once which was nice to see!
The only character I feel any endearment to is Perrin, he is a sweet gentle man who just wants to be a blacksmith. He is the only one who dreams of his humble beginnings and wants to go back the rest have been taken by all the grandeur.
The main issue I have with all the books so far is that the last dragon (Lews Therin) was a well trained male aes sedai with loads of support and yet apparently couldn’t defeat the forsaken and had to just trap them. So why can Rand, a tall ginger village farmer with no training and at best rudimentary sword skills continuously defeat the Dark One and apparently kill Ishmael? I don’t get it….
