America's Dream
by Esmeralda Santiago
I’m glad to have picked up a book from a new to me author but I must say that I did not love Santiago’s writing style. The story has good bones with a protagonist who is flawed but sympathetic enough that I wanted a better life for her. However, the entire book felt like a Spanish telenovela. So much personal drama yet nothing much actually happens within the time period covered in the story. It’s only at the very end where things pick up. If not for the fact that it’s an easy read with short chapters, I would have not gotten through this book that quickly.
