The Secrets Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
4.0

I finished this almost a month ago, but the story and the characters have stuck with me enough that I can remember most of it.

This is the second in a series. I did not realize this until I was in too deep. I would not recommend reading this one first, as there are details from the first book included. This book could easily be a standalone, however, I now have no desire to go back and read the first because I feel I know what happens. This is a shame especially because this was so good. Like so, so good.

Confession - I had bought this so long ago that I didn't remember what it was about and was going to donate it without reading because I have too many books on my physical tbr. I decided to read just the first couple chapters and ended up not being able to put it down.

If you are looking for a character driven story with female characters working through super crappy circumstances, pick this up. If you like defined characters with thorough backstories, characters who experience growth and change in all the right ways, characters who have so much heart, characters who are family or become found family, pick this up. These characters are written so well that I ended the book feeling like I knew them and knowing I would miss them. And flipping through the book again just now...I do miss them.

Life is fraught with danger, betrayal, cruelty. Which is all the more reason to cherish the moments of kindness, of connection, of sweetness—the pat on the knee, the offer to buy her a cake.
