Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie

4.0

This Poirot novel is notable in that it pits four of Christie's recurring characters--Hercule Poirot, Superintendent Battle, Colonel Race, and the debut of Christie's own apple loving alter ego Ariadne Oliver--against four characters who may have previously gotten away with murders. All are brought together at a dinner party hosted by the mysterious Mr. Shaitana who promptly winds up murdered. Lots to enjoy in this one including a rather clever Foreword by the author explaining how this novel will be a different sort of detective story. It is indeed!

Only minor complaint is that there are several pages of exposition about the game of bridge that may resonate better with those more familiar with the game than I am.
