The Wedding People by Alison Espach
5.0
emotional funny hopeful reflective fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Objectively, this may not be a 5 star book but it is for me. The impact this has on me can only be described as staggering; I related so hard to the main character, her feelings of being adrift, the electricity of being mutually infatuated with someone you can’t have, that some of the lines of this book took my breath away. They felt like the writer peered into my brain and was able to compose feelings that I have long had but never been able to articulate. The hope woven into this story also made it so especially profound for me; it felt like the book was nudging me, pointing at the plot, and saying ‘see, it can all work out!’ at a time where I really needed to hear that.

I am under no illusion that everyone will have the same emotional resonance with this book - or even that I would if I had read it at a different time. Some people may even find the plot and use of a suicide attempt triggering or insensitive, although I didn’t think so. Instead, this book gave me that nebulous and indefinable five star feeling that I know will stay with me every time I think of this book. Depending where you’re at, maybe it’ll give you that feeling too.
