The High Mountain Court by A.K. Mulford

4.0

I've been meaning to read THE HIGH MOUNTAIN COURT for a while now and I'm so glad I finally did! I really enjoyed this one and it was a very solid mix of romance and fantasy. The world-building was rich and detailed without dumping a ton of information on the reader and I'm already invested in seeing more of the kingdoms and how all the political maneuverings will work out. I also enjoyed how diverse the cast was and the great mix of LGBTQ+ rep. I will say that the sentence structure was fairly simplistic and got a little repetitive in some parts but for a debut novel it was done really well.

Remy made a great FMC and I loved seeing her find her courage and her place in the world. She's been living in hiding for 13 years, dealing with guilt, fear, and shame over the deaths of her fellow red witches and the High Mountain court. Remy goes through some great growth as she steps into new roles and finally comes out of hiding and I loved the way Hale supported her through it all. As the Eastern fae Prince, Hale had a lot resting on his shoulders and secrets are his livelihood but it's obvious from the beginning that he's an honorable and loyal man. Together, Remy and Hale had amazing chemistry and I loved watching them go from tentative allies to lovers. Their relationship starts out as a slow burn but it definitely pays off in the end.

In addition to Remy and Hale, there were some excellent side characters, especially the Twin Eagles, and I hope we see a lot more of them in future books.

Favorite Quotes:

“You are the most beautiful creature I have ever beheld.” He said it through gritted teeth.

“You say that like it’s a problem,” Remy breathed.

“It is.”

She knew in that moment it was no longer a choice. Consequences be damned, she would follow him anywhere, even into hell itself.

“Good luck to you, Little Sparrow,” Baba Morganna said, knowing Remy had made her decision. “Make sure you cast as many stones into that water before you go, so you may watch those ripples for centuries to come.”

The world would not make her, she would make the world.
