Children of Time
by Adrian Tchaikovsky
From the premise of the book, I'd have given the book 5 stars.
Personally, I would have liked a story purely on the evolution of the new world and inhabitants. I found the end seemed rushed (with resolution being pulled like a rabbit out the hat). More hints would have been appreciated about the development of the spider's science would have fleshed that out.
I can't remember the name of the book, where the creatures were called "barques" (floating creatures), and it followed the development of their race from initial culture to space faring. There was a similar twist of gender abilities/position in society, with the dominance of females/males reversed.
