Apeirogon by Colum McCann

This was a beautiful book. I am neither Rami Elhanan nor Bassam Aramin so I can't speak to its accuracy in the portrayal of their story but I feel it could only have done it a service. It has been a while since I underlined with such fervor. Even if McCann was shy of center with this telling, it was clearly with the best of intentions.

But for me what made this book was its design. I have a feeling that either readers loved it, or hated it. I am of the former opinion. Each canto, as he describes them, gave a chance for a breather as well as giving a space for little known tidbits to add extras sides to the shape this novel was forming. Those parts were what I underlined most often.

This was my novel of the summer. Perhaps of the whole year.
