Scroogled by Cory Doctorow

The total dystopian vision of a world where Google has truly taken over everything because they can Do Search Right. The opening is a bit of an info-dump, and then the ball gets rolling, ever moving downhill in much the same way as previous visions of Big Brother have, with just the right touch of how Google could find themselves in that position. I’m still a bit iffy on the story, even though it does exactly what it set out to accomplish, and I think that’s mainly because—and this is a strange statement coming from me—it’s all about the idea and not about the characters. Greg and Maya, even for their work connection to Google, could be anybody, and maybe that’s what Doctorow wants you to believe. Just like poor Mr. Tuttle in Brazil, this could happen to you, and it’s not because of a fly in the typewriter, but just that one search that one time that labels you a Person of Interest.
