This book was heavy. Whitehead writes with a tone that is short and tired, almost accepting, but broken. Whitehead talks about the trauma the boys go through, but it’s more of this looming, eerie presence—you don’t need to know every dark detail to know it’s there and it’s bad. So, so many moments made you stop and think, not just about the current situation, but about today too. Hard to put how I feel into words, but I am grateful for Whitehead’s telling of this story, for Turner and Elwood’s telling of this story, too.
