The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook
by Edmund J. Bourne
I've read many books about anxiety, and this one is certainly the most comprehensive. Clocking in at nearly 500 pages, Dr. Bourne covers nearly every possible angle on anxieties and phobias: definitions and symptoms; their physiological and emotional origins; and a vast number of potential remedies, including breathing and relaxation exercises, nutrition, medication, "self-talk" (CBT), and even spirituality. Most chapters also include tangible suggestions and written exercises to help readers engage with the material.
That said, a few critiques:
- I wouldn't read try to read this cover-to-cover if you're in the throes of anxiety and need immediate help. It's too long and dense to be useful to someone in crisis; it's also a bit dry and lacking in personality. David Burns would be a better choice if you need some comforting, more narrowly focused bibliotherapy.
- While I'm not at all averse to holistic medical practices, I found some of Dr. Bourne's medical/nutrition suggestions a bit questionable. Colonics, Chinese herbs, liver detoxification, candidiasis ... I would absolutely consult with a medical doctor before self-diagnosing yourself with "body toxicity" or undertaking an anti-yeast/anti-fungal diet.
Overall, this is a good reference book that provides a solid overview to anxiety/phobias and helpful suggestions for further reading.
