I cannot believe that I forgot to add a review to this book but thinking back I was probably deeply lost to the emotions caused by this book.
Fredrik Backman delivered (once again, because of course) an immaculate story and this particular story hit me so hard. Like reading this book as a prior foster kid with a sister who passed away almost 8 years ago when she was 19 and I was 17….was an emotional journey.
The writing was amazing (it’s Backman so of course):
“some of us are born in the wrong place, the whole of our childhood is like being shipwrecked on a desert island, we ache with homesickness without knowing what home is yet”
“That's the worst thing about death, that it happens over and over again. That the human body can cry forever.”
“That we create and paint and dance and fall in love, that's our rebellion against eternity. Everything beautiful is a shield”
This book feels like it was written about my life experiences and it had me tearing up every few pages. Just immaculate.
The story written on these pages will stay so important to me. Definitely one of, if not, the best book I’ve read in 2025.
