The Rivals by Daisy Whitney
5.0

I love, love, love Daisy Whitney! I think that she has a unique voice. This is easily one of the best sequels I have read in quite sometime. Though Mockingbirds can stand alone, Whitney explores a little talked about experience, being defined by a rape.

This book has Alex feeling alone and isolated from the rest of the school. She also has a cloud above her head of the events in the first book. This is a tough issue. Though she desperately wants to move past it, she is forced to confront people that blame her every day and this causes a lot of strain.

Her relationships also begin to deteriorate, in a very realistic way. This book definitely sets up for a love triangle, but not in a way that was obvious or off putting. The two guys are both very supportive of her, while one was there for her all last year, the other, less so, but shares her passion for music. This creates a question as to who she should be with.

I think that a drug ring is a perfect way to delve into the Mockingjays. We definitely got more information and details as to how the process works and the things going on behind closed doors.
Spoiler I think that a rival group is the perfect way to bring tension to the school. I think that it was silly that they could assault Alex with little/no consequences. I also thought their reasons for it were ridiculous. I did feel the pain for every character.

All in all, I was very pleased with Whitney's new book. I will gladly read any more she puts out in this series and will read anything she puts out.
