The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

5.0

At first I did not enjoy it at all, finding the writing style cumbersome (so many commas!) but after the first couple of chapters I got over my initial doubts and began to appreciate the peculiarities of Offred’s narration, and why Atwood chose that particular style.
The plot and concepts were fascinating from the start and brilliantly executed. I disagree with criticisms which say that the plot does not make logical sense- I would argue that Offred’s inability to fully explain some of the instances which occur further the realism of her oppression under the Gilead regime.
I can understand why this book is seen as a feminist classic. My mother told me, upon seeing I was reading it, that it was “terrifying”- I think she was not wrong.
