Night Film
by Marisha Pessl
The Good : Literary talent is literary talent is literary talent. Pessl has it in spades.
The Bad : . The character development (or lack thereof). Pessl's weird obsession with italicising every third word in every sentence drove me bonkers. The ending was almost as though Pessl was exhausted and wanted to finish up as soon as she could (I'm not above allowing a few loose ends, but this was one giant HUH?!) - sloppy and unsatisfying.
I'm glad I read this around Halloween, the spooky thriller bits were well written and went well with the howling wind outside my bedroom window.
(Pessl's debut novel `Special Topics in Calamity Physics` went straight to my Favourite Books Of All Time list when I read it back in 2006. I waited 8 long years for the publication of her follow up, `Night Film` and I am a little disappointed with what I found. Perhaps this is because I held her up to an impossible standard, one she could never have reached? I know anticipation is a silent killer, that expectation for a novel to blow every single pair of socks you own right off your feet for years to come⦠what novel could achieve this? Partly, I am to blame for the fall of my nostalgia fueled expectations.)
