Chess
by Stefan Zweig
This was not what I expected. The story follows our unnamed narrator who engages along with some other members of a cruise ship, in a chess game tournament with a world renowned grandmaster. The real protagonist of the story is introduced in the first chess game as a stranger with a preternatural talent for chess. What follows is an almost gothic descent into madness. The tone reminded me of Edgar Allen Poe "Tell-Tale Heart" in a strange way. it had a darker feel to it than I envisioned.
