The Thing Beneath the Bed by Patrick Rothfuss

This hilarious short story is fantastic. It isn't for children, as it says, unless the child has a very dark sense of humor perhaps. There are three endings, each in succession, and that third one is the finest twist. I've read plenty of longer literary works that couldn't pull off such a twist. I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my tree.

The illustrations, by the way, are also a wonderful example of dark humor. The entire reading experience was fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys laughing at the bumps in the night.
