Sancia used to be a slave; now free, she’s still a slave to the magical plate implanted in her head. It helps her immeasurably when she’s thieving and scrambling over buildings and escaping people who’d prefer she not steal their property - but the agony of using her talents means she must use them judiciously.
It’s a riveting action story with a very likable main character, a scrappy girl whose background is dark and harsh, and whose only focus is on surviving. She winds up with an interesting assortment of sidekicks - a former warrior who only wants justice, a scriver whose focus is on creating magical objects, and the scriver’s brilliant assistant.
I really enjoyed rooting for the underdog during her repeated quests. Recommended for steampunk / fantasy fans.
