Pay Dirt by Rita Mae Brown
3.0

In the small town of Crozet, Harry and her tiger cat, Mrs. Murphy, live. Everything is very status quo until one day a Hell’s Angel crashes into town demanding to see his girlfriend… only no one has heard of her. It’s not long before the biker is found murdered, baffling the town. Harry’s animal friends, Mrs. Murphy, Tee Tucker and Pewter are on the case, ready to dig up the truth. This was a step above the previous book in this series, which the reader likes. This plot felt more believable, it wasn’t earth-shattering in how good it was, but it was still fun to read and try to figure out. The reader likes how fast-paced these books are; they’re easy to read and jump into without feeling like you need to read other books to understand this one. The interactions the animals have with one another is hilarious, and the fact that the humans can’t hear/understand gives it that extra layer of humour. It’s definitely an endearing part to the story. Seeing the love triangle form between Harry, Fair and Blair (did we have to make the men’s names rhyme?) has been entertaining. It’s a nice background plot that doesn’t take away from the main plot or overall story; it’s added in so subtly that the reader finds it amusing at this point. It does feel that with each passing book a new character is mentioned that wasn’t there before, but they’ve always been a part of the town, just never spoken about until now, which does make for a bit of a confusing read logistically. It shifts what we thought we knew a bit, but it’s not too big of a distraction, just something this reader has picked up on. Like we’re adding new characters to benefit the plot, and they’re always very two dimensional. As for our main characters though, they aren’t two dimensional, but rather grow a little each book, with new little tidbits shared that help to round out their person as the novels continue. In the end, this was an enjoyable novel in the series.
