For a shorter book, this one had a LOT going on.
Lady Mairghread Sinclair begins the story with an attempted betrothal to Sir Alan, Laird Tristan Mackay's obnoxious step brother. But the feelings between Tristan and Mair are a lot stronger than those between the odious Sir Alan and Mair.
I liked the story overall, but it did have some big flaws.
Why would they try and marry off a Lady to a man like Sir Alan? Ugh. Surprise surprise, it was a bad idea.
Tristan's past history with lovers is brought up a LOT during a time when men were known and expected to 'play' before marriage while women were not. It shouldn't have been such a big deal, even to a Lady with insecurities about her lack of experience. Besides that, Tristan's numbers were quite low for a handsome man his age. And having his past partner show up in the epilogue was just... awkward and unnecessary.
Sorcha and Lady Beatris were never really punished for their parts in anything. That was probably my BIGGEST gripe. They deserved death. Period. * And..the author fouls the name of my favorite character from another series (Sorcha from the Sevenwaters series).*
I do want to read the others, so hopefully some of the issues in this one smooth out as the stories with the other Sinclair siblings continues.
