The Two Lives of Lydia Bird

The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver
“I found the old me, still in here, and the new me sitting right alongside her. We made friends.”
This is the kind of book that sticks with you. Although I found it slow to start and wondered where it was headed, these characters and this story wriggled its way into my heart and by the end I was not ready to say goodbye.
The story starts on the day Lydia’s fiancé dies. Through a touch of magic she discovers a parallel life where Freddie is still alive and well. This concept didn’t immediately click with me, but I think that was kind of the point. We got to see Lydia balance both worlds, struggle through her grief while also getting to know Freddie.
I really loved how grief was handled in this book. The support of her mom and sister, coworkers and the people in the outer edges of her circle were really the heart of the book. I liked that it showed both the helpful and unhelpful ways support is offered, because as everyone knows it’s almost impossible to know how to help someone in their worst moments.
Reminded me of P.S. I Love You in all the best ways. This would make a fabulous book club choice, so much to discuss!
