An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo

4.0

An interesting collection of poems, history, and even a few songs. Unsurprisingly, there are some brutal depictions of the treatment of the native peoples post-colonization, past and present. There are also love poems, and poems that feel more like stories than poems. Quite beautiful, and brutal, and honest, and fascinating.

The one complaint I have is that, in audio format, it wasn't always obvious when something was a quote and when a new poem had begun. Presumably in book format, the quotes would have been set aside and made more obvious. In this form, I usually figured out it was a quote when she gave the source.

Other than that, I quite enjoyed it, even though I don't usually go in much for poetry.
