I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

3.0

It took me quite a few tries to really get into this book, and even this time I made myself push through. The multiple philosophy lessons that the beginning half of this book is filled with kept me from wanting to read on, but I knew the hype surrounding this book and I wanted to experience it for myself.

I think this is a very unique read, not that scary or haunting but something I probably won't find in another piece of fiction. The author did a good job of creating an atmosphere that was unsettling around every corner so I do applaud them for their writing talents.

This book relies a lot on open ended strings, which makes sense given the nature of the story but it's usually not my cup of tea. I feel like I need an explanation essay to connect all the little bits and pieces. I have my own theories - and maybe that's the fun of it - but I didn't feel fulfilled with that ending. that's not saying it was bad.

My feelings are complicated. I think this is a genuinely unique and well written book for the genre, it's not something you're likely to experience elsewhere. Reid has a distinct way of creating his setting and bringing you along for the uncomfortable ride, but it's not going to be my favourite book of the year, nor was it particularly frightening to me. I'm glad I read it and would say that anybody interested should give it a go!
