Perfectly serviceable light read, though I found the sex a bit vanilla for the banter and ideation leading up to it. Or maybe not even vanilla but just uncommitted to the previous ideas? The magic system here was really incomprehensible and though I appreciated the in the moment nature of the world build, it seemed really odd to have the house of shadow exist and basically never matter. Also I kind of hated how only characters that mattered for basically the whole book were given names, that removed a lot of stakes from the early trials. I also found parts of the twist ending to be very underexplained and kind of thrown together. But it basically did what it said on the tin and I had more fun discussing it with friends that I might have thought beforehand.
Graphic: Genocide, Violence, War
Moderate: Incest, Sexual assault, Death of parent
