The Lost Century
by Larissa Lai
The research that went into this book is incredible, and its insights on Hong Kong’s history are critical and thoughtful. The book was difficult for me to read, and I had to come back to it a couple times because it felt like the plot was just dark violent tragedies happening one after the other. I gave it a three stars because of this, but that is a personal rating, as I get really immersed in and affected by books. At the same time, I understand that stories shouldn’t necessarily be watered down for the comfort of the listener, even fictionalized, and they teach about the past in ways other types of education can’t. I’m still glad I read it, and want to learn more about Hong Kong.
