The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth
4.0

Fun, engaging. It was neat to see all the legwork one might have had to put in to design an assassination or foil one back in the mid 20th and earlier. On one hand, it is all very tedious, especially for the cops. On the other hand, it is easy to understand, unlike all the computery stuff that would surely be a part of a spy novel these days.

About this shadowy Jackal I did wonder, however, why he had not been slowly collecting and synthesizing identities over time if this was, indeed, his profession and he was competent and experienced enough to attract the attention of the OAS. Recently missing/generated passports appeared to have been his undoing and it seems like a very easy problem to avoid.
