Next of Kin by Hannah Bonam-Young

5.0

Chloe’s birth mother has unexpectedly had another baby, and Chloe immediately signs up to be a next-of-kin guardian, but she doesn’t pass CPS’s financial evaluation. To help guardians like Chloe, CPS has created a new initiative where two potential guardians join households to qualify. Chloe reluctantly agrees to try this, and she is paired up with grumpy Warren, who is trying to get custody of his deaf teenage brother.

This book was the sweetest! I was hooked immediately by Chloe’s situation and her drive to give her surprise baby sister the best life possible. Chloe was able to break through Warren’s very stony exterior and help him show his kindness and patience. I absolutely loved the dynamic in their household with their slowly developing relationship, the confused teenager trying to fit in at school, and the infant they’re all teaming together to raise. I loved watching Chloe and Warren grow individually and together. I adored this book and highly recommend it!
