Death Comes to Pemberley
by P.D. James
Definitely one of the more out-there spin-offs from a Jane Austen novel that I've come across; P.D. James takes the aftermath of Pride and Prejudice and turns it into a crime thriller.
The premise is that a dead body is found on Pemberley grounds, with George Wickham stood over it covered in blood. The plot follows the Darcy family as they try to get to the bottom of what happened and whether or not Wickham really is guilty.
The plot focuses on Darcy, and the weight of the situation on him, quite heavily; I would have liked to have seen more of Elizabeth and their relationship as a married couple tied into the story - as I find it hard to believe that Austen's most beloved couple wouldn't turn to each other for strength in such a situation.
I appreciated the book for what it was once I'd read it, but it's not the kind of book that I would read again and again.
