The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

4.0

I'm rounding up from a 3.5. This had some good creep elements and a few shocking & gory deaths (which became much less shocking but no less gory as the story went on), and the somewhat clunky, disconnected voice of the writing worked for me. The pacing was way off; this would have worked better for me as a short story. Plenty could have been cut to keep up suspense, especially as it became very clear where the story was headed. But it was a cool tale of nontraditional (or maybe SUPERtraditional?) haunting and revenge. Reading this at the same time as Braiding Sweetgrass is a real experience in how we give & take from the land.
