Story of O
by Pauline Réage
A love letter to subjugation (and some French guy). The Story of O is a descent into madness whose landscape takes the form of obsessive devotion and injurious kink. And just when you think you have reached the deepest abyss of degradation and pain, O is plummeted yet another level, leaving the reader crushed under its horrendously depraved gravity.
Do I feel bad for O? At times yes. But also, like Sisyphus, through her unimaginable perseverance and devotion, one must imagine that O is happy.
