This Is Ear Hustle: Unflinching Stories of Everyday Prison Life by Nigel Poor, Earlonne Woods
4.0
THIS IS EAR HUSTLE: UNFLINCHING STORIES OF EVERYDAY PRISON LIFE by Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods is a wonderful companion to the @earhustlesq podcast, filled with voices of men and women affected by incarceration.
I highly recommend listening to a few episodes of the This is Ear Hustle podcast first, both because it’s one of my all-time favorite podcasts, but also because having Earlonne’s and Nigel’s voices in my head as I was reading the book made it all the more special. Their easy banter and camaraderie, their ability to draw people out authentically, and their compassion cast a warmth over both the podcast and the book.
Some of my favorite parts were hearing a fuller version of Earlonne’s story, learning from the experience of Karen, who got married to and had children with a man who was imprisoned, and witnessing the dialogue among men whose lives were changed dramatically by the deeply unjust Three Strikes law.
This is a great companion to THE NEW JIM CROW (Michelle Alexander), COURTROOM 302 (Steve Bogira), and JUST MERCY (Bryan Stevenson) as it highlights more directly the stories and voices of people who are or have been incarcerated.
