Fresh Ice by Marina Vivancos

challenging emotional hopeful lighthearted reflective fast-paced

5.0

I'm obsessed. Totally, utterly obsessed with this story and if I could give "Fresh Ice" six stars, I would.

I can't think of an author who does omegaverse quite like Marina Vivancos: her stories are that absolutely fabulous mix of steamy, smutty ABO deliciousness and a heartfelt, and at times gut-wrenching, emotional rollercoaster. All of her stories read like a whack of feelings on the head and this one was no exception.

"Fresh Ice" contains all the usual, lovely omegaverse tropes (heat/rut, scenting, neediness and possessiveness, to name a few) AND hockey (ft. a grumpy/sunshine teammate pairing); AND, one the top tier romance tropes known to mankind, AKA, The Secret Omega™; AND absolutely endearing leads that need to be protected at all costs. God, this author spoils us.

Alonso was a fantastic protagonist. He's stubborn and quiet and reserved and wound so tight in his struggle to survive, and to keep on playing hockey, and to please his dad, he doesn't realize that he's actually a powerhouse, and a person that totally deserves to be loved and cherished, regardless of his designation. Characters like Alonso are my absolute weakness, and I loved him to bits: I just wanted to see him happy and appreciated.
Levy was his perfect counterbalance: he's endlessly optimistic and cheerful, generous and lovable, and 100% ready to shower Alonso with his undivided attention and affection. They had great chemistry together, even before the lead up to their first explosive steamy moment, and the banter was seriously top-notch.
The steam was *sighs* god, very good. Very, very good and gah, I kind of want to do a re-read straight away.
I also absolutely adored the side characters: Levy's parents were total gems, their teammates seemed fabulous (and hopefully two certain rival captains will be getting their own shot a happiness sooner rather than later 👀)

I have the biggest book hangover at the moment, especially after *that* ending. I sincerely hope there's going to be a sequel, either about them (even though this novel is a solid HFN) or any other character, because I don't think I could cope without one.
The only way forward is to read a dozen more omegaverse novels, isn't? Oh well.

Thank you GRR for the ARC. I received it in exchange for an honest review.
