Night of the Mannequins
by Stephen Graham Jones
FUCK. This was SO GOOD. The kind of good that has me rethinking recent 5 star ratings I've given because this was so clearly a perfect read.
This was my first encounter with Stephen Graham Jones (though The Only Good Indians sits on my kindle and My Heart is a Chainsaw on my bookshelf), and I am hooked. The brutality that had me cringing away from my phone (the wire hanger through the nose bit....christ), the humor that had me laughing to myself at my desk, one of the best and most unsettling narrators since Alex in A Clockwork Orange.
I had no idea what to really expect going into this. Aside from mannequins. I figured we'd have evil, murdering mannequins. But having Sawyer be the one killing off his friends to save them from Manny....wow. And Shanna being alive?!?! I figured she was dead but it had, in fact, been an accident.
Basically, this was phenomenal and I will recommend it to everyone ever.
