Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong

2.75

i am nothing if not a sucker for chloe gong.

immortal longings was my highest anticipated read of the year and i will finish anything chloe writes. but this book, much as i wanted it to be, was definitely not for me. of course, i did have an enjoyable time with chloe’s writing style, yet i couldn’t help but feel the flatness of every character. even though the city is supposed to be technologically advanced, the sci-fi aspect of the story felt like it was being thrown around only when convenient. the disparity of san-er was pushed aside. i’m aware that this is to be a series, but the conflict of the crescent society and outsider rebels was spread thinly and ended abruptly.

and my biggest concern, i wanted so much more from the coliseum scene! yes there’s a plot twist afterwards but it should have been longer, depicting the betrayal and angst of the very story it’s based on.

as much as i adore calla and anton, i think obsession is all they have. they have no chemistry, i fear. august and galipei have more personality than them.
