My Inventions by Nikola Tesla
4.0

"Most persons are so absorbed in the contemplation of the outside world that they are wholly oblivious to what is passing on within themselves.”

Reading this felt like a direct line into the mind of one of history's most brilliant, eccentric, and complex individuals. Written in Tesla's own words, this autobiography isn’t just an account of his groundbreaking inventions in electricity and radio but a window into his very unique way of seeing the world. Tesla describes his inventions and ideas with a clarity that’s both awe-inspiring and surprisingly accessible, revealing how he saw the potential to overcome not just technical obstacles but the social and physical limitations of his era.

Tesla’s quirky humor and the humanity beneath his genius shine through- whether recounting episodes of painstaking experimentation, his frustrations with contemporaries who misunderstood his visions, or his idiosyncratic need for perfection (even counting steps and recalculating meal portions). While he occasionally seems oblivious to his own hardships—like the mental breakdowns he endured—his selective amnesia, as he puts it, only serves to amplify the force of his creativity.

"My Inventions" offers readers not only an incredible intellectual journey, but also an intimate look at a man whose visions were as vast as they were ahead of his time. In Tesla’s mind, inventing was never about fame or fortune; it was about pushing the boundaries of what was possible. His often-overlooked work in wireless energy and the “telautomatic” (early robotics) concept was fascinating; despite financial struggles and being dismissed by those who found his ideas too radical, Tesla never abandoned his hope that his discoveries might transform the world.

This memoir stands as a testament to Tesla’s singularity—a man who, despite existing in a space between the present and a future few others could imagine, saw possibilities in every challenge.
