The Tale of Despereaux
by Kate DiCamillo
This chapter book follows the life of a mouse named Despereaux who loves a princess name Pea. It also follows a servant named Miggery Sow who has a wish of being a princess. It also follows the story of a rat named Roscuro who falls into the queen’s soup and kills her. Since this book follows three different characters, there is a lot to comment on and learn from. I definitely enjoyed this book as a child and find that it has a lot of great themes and meanings, one of them being forgiveness. Several characters in this book are treated poorly by Roscuro, but in the end they forgive him and treat him with kindness because that is the compassionate thing to do. This book definitely deals with a light versus darkness concept and I felt as though the darkness outweighs the light in some parts. At times, this book felt a little depressing for a children’s book but I was very satisfied with the happy ending.
