The Library Book by Susan Orlean
3.0

I'm playing a no-thought grab-and-go game with non-fiction books this year. Whether or not this will have any bearing on my reception, I do not know.

This book was a strange, nichey amalgam of library fanfare and true crime. I thought the beginning story about the Los Angeles library fire would be a portal into the value of libraries. Cool.

Of note: This reviewer's sole published LinkedIn article is on that very subject. He is passionate about the subject of libraries and would live there, if they rented space.

While that did happen in spurts and in microversal detail, we kept coming back to the Los Angeles fire incident. I was done with that storyline by chapter 5 and it stuck around for another 25. My other qualm was the randomsauce moments captured in this book, from banal interactions of librarians and quirky patrons to intricate characteristics of the accused arsonist's family members.

Sprinkled throughout, this is a love letter to the infinite possibilities of your local library and the stewards who make it a magical place. I tell my wife all the time - if I somehow achieve financial independence by age 45, you will see me employed at my local library. The crisp scent of fantastical realms. The palpable thirst for knowledge. The dreams turned into reality - all at your access. There is no other place like it.

I think I am going to donate right after this writing.
