The Art Thief
by Michael Finkel
slow-paced
There were two things missing in this book for me. The first was detailed descriptions of the artwork, and what made these pieces worth displaying. The second thing was the thrill of the hunt both on the side of the law and of the thieves.
Some descriptions would’ve given the novel a sense of place and time. It starts off very detailed in the initial three chapters and then it falls off and becomes a timeline of Stefan’s exploits. most of the pieces at that point become nameless a cigarette box here, belt, buckle there and so on.
Without the descriptions and a detailed investigation of some sort, the book kind of lacks tension. The timeline and Stefan’s state of mind and motivations take centerstage here. They are described competently and make for an interesting tale.
