The Girls by Emma Cline

dark emotional reflective medium-paced

4.0

I would really like to see an A24 production of this (in which the heart symbol would have to be more emphasised than in the book and would be really inconic) Throughout the book Evie is surrounded by boys and men who time and time again display the power they have over Evie and the woman around her. You see it when she’s a teen obsessively crushing over boys with her friends, when shes in the predominantly female cult run by a man they all idolise, and years later when she’s an adult interacting with a family friend and his young and naive girlfriend. You also see it in the ending on the final page, which I’ve seen people describe as sort of lacklustre, but I felt was something all woman can relate to and really drives the point home. I liked it. I liked it in a way that i probablly won’t think about it again any time soon or reread it, but would definitely watch a film adaptation if it ever were to happen. I think the thing that lacked for me personally, was the explanation of the end of the cult, which felt somewhat rushed and undeveloped (????) and I wouldve also liked more horror and gore but hey thats just me.
