This is a history of a moment in time that changed everything. It includes intriguing portraits of the players, insightful glimpses into their characters and is told with a genuine interest in the period. It has everything I normally love in a history book but it left me cold and uninterested. I’m thinking that it’s because I really don’t know the time in question as well as I probably should which left me grasping for details and context, much of which is, I hasten to add, provided by the author. But this is just a case of me not enjoying something that other people have.
