Continuing through my reading journey into the ZA universe with volume 5, “Cursed Fates”, I finally get why Booktok/Bookstagram went nuts for this series. The angst, yearning, slow burn and emotional damage of the Vega twins and their significant others is off the charts, not to mention even more plot twists that had me growling in frustration. Moreover, a huge kudos is owed to the authors for their incredibly brave twist and handling of the fated mates trope - they took something tired and gave it a twist that was gutting.
However, and it pains me to say this since I am actually quite enjoying this series and will continue to the end, I cannot get out of my own way when it comes to my initial reactions to the plot and world building. Although it is true that I am becoming more invested in the characters as the books continue, I still have my reservations primarily that this is a romantasy with over emphasis on the romance that has been stretched almost to the breaking point.
The two parts of my mind fighting over what’s good and what’s not about the whole is what makes me keep my rating so low. But for the life of me, I can’t stop reading despite my frustrations (five books to cover a one year period!! 😖). And I have to admit the spice is 🔥🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🔥.
I am trying to reserve full judgment until I finish the series so, with that in mind, I’m off to start the next volume…
