The Help by Kathryn Stockett
5.0
I never read bestsellers at the time at which they're popular. There's just something inside me that rebels against being told what to like. I was given this book and thought enough time had passed that I could make up my own mind whether it was enjoyable or not. It's hard to say that you enjoyed such a book, given the subject matter, but I thought it was absolutely wonderful and thought provoking and I feel profoundly affected by it. It's a difficult thing to pull off; a white woman talking about black people's struggles as if they were her own but I think she does the subject justice and I didn't feel that her colour played any role in this book which is ironic given the subject. I suppose because I'm British the whole thing felt very far removed like it was a different planet but it wasn't really and it's shameful for everyone. I would recommend this book to everybody.
