The Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu

4.0

Have you ever wanted to talk to ghosts?

Horror is one of my favorite genres so I was immediately pulled in with the combination of occult libraries, ghosts & Zimbabwean magic. I loved the creepy atmosphere in this! Everything from the dark corners of the Edinburgh streets to the otherworldly feel of the everyThere and the Library of the Dead grabbed my attention and got lost in wanting to explore every detail.

This world also has great characters. I loved following Ropa around as she tried to solve this mystery while also providing for her family. Reading this in her voice took some getting use to at first, but came to feel more like a conversation or inner monologue as it went on. I also really liked her relationship with Priya and watching them form a bond. (That wheelchair/car chase sequence was one of my favorite parts!)

If there’s anything I’d wish for more of, it would be more time in the actual library itself. It doesn’t play as big a part as I thought it would and I was really loving that part of the worldbuilding. Other than that, I really enjoyed this and would definitely be down for more mysteries in this version of Edinburgh.
