Rue is selfish, determined to be angry and resentful and contrary, and a general asshole. Even for a YA where the Mc is meant to have growing to do, she is particularly awful.
Author didn’t explain basically anything about how the magic works or what the world is like. There’s almost no world building, no explanation until close to the end of the book. There’s also a really deep theme of racism/colonialism which could have been done SO much better, but author introduced the themes and didn’t explain how they were relevant until over halfway thru the book. She also uses the same three phrases a million times nonstop, it’s annoying and distracting.
This was not a fun read and i would not recommend it.
